The HeARTland Hustle honors local historical figures through art, movement and music. This year’s honoree is legendary musician Lotus Dickey (1911-1989), a treasured fiddle and guitar player whose 120 tune songbook is used by old-time musicians around the world. The second annual event features a 5k Art Run/Walk in the morning and a concert in the evening, with The Tin Whiskey Sisters from Louisville, Kentucky, and the Indiana University Violin Virtuosi, from Bloomington, Indiana.

The 5k route, which begins and ends at beautiful Marea Radcliff Park, will be decorated with art pieces created by student and community groups from around the area, including broken instruments that have been repurposed, such as violins, pianos, guitars and more. The 5k is chip-timed and participants have the option of purchasing a collectible race t-shirt with their registration. The evening concert offers a celebration of the fiddle and violin, through two amazing regional groups, The Tin Whiskey Sisters and the Indiana University Violin Virtuosi. Additionally, the Farmer’s Market Jammers will provide pre-concert entertainment during a silent auction, featuring goods and services donated by businesses from around the area.

There are many ways to participate in the event! Runners, walkers and exercise enthusiasts of all kinds can register for the race. Artists of all ages and experience levels, from youth to professional, are encouraged to submit art for the exhibit; all artists will be credited for their work. Winners of the race from each age group, along with top fundraising teams, will be recognized at the race’s conclusion. The day’s festivities will also include various forms of entertainment, music and guest speakers. Kids ages 12 and under may participate in the race FREE OF CHARGE.

Donations of partially broken or unplayable instruments to be repurposed into art for the event are also being accepted. Concert tickets can be purchased separately, or any 5k registration doubles as entry into the evening concert.
